Shaking a tail feather
Catalyst is a growing Kiwi/Khmer social enterprise set up by development entrepreneurs Gerard Wakefield, Hana Wakefield and Phirun Oum. We're a pioneering social business, unique by world standards.
Using kiwi and Khmer ingenuity we've become a leader in Cambodia's growing sustainable food movement, producing up to 2,000 free-range chickens a month.
In 2012, we started with just 100 chickens and a dream to build a sustainable business from the ground up, based on traditional knowledge generated from within the local community, reversing the normal process of expert-driven development.
Since then, we've collaborated with a network of rural small-holder business partners in Chhouk, Southern Cambodia, so they can sustainably supplement their income and savings. The hardship they've endured growing up in Cambodia's turbulent past and their resilience inspires us to continue striving for excellence in our business model. They're the ones who come up with new ways of doing things and we develop our knowledge together.
In 2015 we set up our first farm hub in Chhouk where we raise chicks for supply to villagers, manufacture our own 100% natural healthy feed, and coordinate sales of our own village-grown brand. Our team has created a smart value-chain ownership system from chick incubation to retail, with no net-waste production where chicken manure is recycled into rich fertiliser.
Socially and environmentally better development.
